Tabby on Sofa WIP Update
Monday, December 14th, 2009
The first and second layers of color are finally done on the Sofa. Now I just have to decide to antique the sofa or leave it bright like it is.
Another close up to show some of the detail that has been applied so far. Can see the first wash of color of the toy on the bottom of the photo and have applied a very light wash on the white parts of her face. Most white you see, isn’t just plain white…but varying shades of this color.Thatched Barn of Old ~ an older piece
Friday, November 27th, 2009
I have decided to post a few of my older pieces of Art and this is one of them.
Have always dreamed of having a nice barn for my animals and I to enjoy. I love Thatched roofs. In my many doodles of barns that I have done, I came up with this one. My Dream Barn.
This is a Pen and Ink with a watercolor pencil wash done in 2007.

What Paper and Mediums do I use for some of my paintings?
Monday, October 19th, 2009I had someone ask me what supplies do I use and recommend for painting my Pen and Inks?
For the Ink………..I use both ink & brush- India waterproof ink and Pens. The pens I prefer are the “Sakura’s Pigma Micron Pen“ with permanent, waterproof, pigmented ink, in sizes 005 and 01 and for finer work, the “Copic Multiliner” 0.03 Pen. Thay can be used dry or wet, on the paper or with a brush. Once the ink is dry, you can do wet watercolor washes over the painting without the fear of picking up the black ink and ruining your painting.
The best watercolor pencils I have used to date are the “Derwent Watercolour Pencils”. I use my Derwent watercolor pencils like you would a Cake of traditonal watercolor.
Have found many people become discouraged when the paper they use is not suited for the art they do. It falls apart, fuzzes or peels when they try to put more than one layer of ink or color on it.
So, Paper is just important, maybe even more important than the mediums one uses. When I first started out, I used cold press watercolor paper which did not always hold up well. Then someone recommended to me to try a good quality Hot Press paper. Lets just say, I will never go back to cold press.
I found the best paper for the many layers of ink and watercolor pencil wash I do, is the “Fabriano Artistico” and I prefer their “Bright White Hot Press Watercolor Block”. Is a nice super smooth 140lb paper and gives me no problems.
For my Derwent watercolor pencil storage, I tossed the tins they came in and bought some nice pencils cases. Makes it so much easier to store and use.
Paint brushes..I use mostly sizes 00, 01, 02, 06. Believe or not my favorite brush is the one that came in the Derwent watercolor pencil set. Princeton’s are a cheap brush but hold up very well and are nice to use.
I have included some photos of my instruments of creating. In one photo you can see how I set up what I need, when I am actively painting.
If anyone has some favorites they like to paint with and why, please feel free to add a comment.
Corsair Work in Progress
Friday, September 25th, 2009
This is the photograph I took, that I am using for this piece. Is of my Favorite fighter the FG-1D Corsair, Navy didn’t like them much as these planes were pretty much blind when landing and taking off. Other wise they were a good fighter.
It will be done in Watercolor pencil with a small addition of Ink. Not quite the way I normally do my paintings but I wanted to try to do most of this painting in watercolor.
I spent a number of hours penciling detail in, around the engine. Started adding color to the inside of the engine and props.
Am taking my time adding the dark shading around the engine, added another layer of color on the props. Still lots of color to
add to the engine. It looks like it should be simple to paint but it is anything but simple. Also working on the wing shading.
Continuing to work on the engine, have been spending time working on the lower engine components.
More shading to the body work which needs to be built up slowly to get the best depth.
Added one more wash to the blades.
Should only be a couple more weeks before it is finished.
After about a week break from painting to work on my yarn, I am again working on the Corsair.
Have been working on the lower engine detail and the underside of the fighter. Slowly working layers of color to get the best depth I can.
Still a lot of detail to do.
I put the finishing touches on this old Corsair just this morning. It is sitting on a dirt run away with an ominious sky in the back ground. I have used my favorite 140lb hot press paper, Watercolor pencil and Ink.
I have to admit…I really like painting Fighters a lot… even more so than horses, if you can believe it.
Icelandic horse painting ~ work in progress
Saturday, August 29th, 2009
I have penciled in a very rough sketch of Dyfra pacing and have been adding low mountains, some clouds, bit of water and mid ground features..still have to pencil in the foreground rocks and grass. The landscape will look like some place along the Coast where the mountains meet the sea. Rather like many of the places in the Puget Sound.
Where I want very dark areas I place an x, that way I will not forget as the painting progresses.
Couldn’t help myself.. had to color in her eye first. Then I started to work on the storm clouds next and figuring out what method I like best for applying the watercolor. I have decided I like the Wet on Wet method best for the clouds, as it looks more natural to me.This is a large painting and will take me quite awhile to complete it.
Close up of her eye… is a bit blurry.
I am about 50% done with the sky and clouds. I am making the sky color quite bright because my Scanner has a hard time picking up on the pale blue colors.
Just need to do a few touch ups on the sky and clouds.
Started with the first and second wash of color on the mountains in the background. You can easily see the differences in each application of color.
Snow covered mountains in the far left of the picture are pretty much finished. Also started working on the bright blue water on the left of the painting.
A Close up of what I have done so far. The background is an composite of many photographs I have taken of the Puget Sound in WA.
Very close to finishing the mountains on the right of the painting. Starting on some of the inlet water and the small out croppings in the mid picture. At this point the painting is all watercolor.
I have been working on the water and the ground on both sides of the horse. Filling in the dirt, rocks and moss.
Still undecided on the horse’s color, though I am leaning to a Dappled Grey.
I finally can post an update on my Icelandic horse painting. Working on the ground and rocks, still have a lot to do. Will be a couple of weeks before I can start on the Icelandic.
Not quite finished with the ground but I have decided to work on the Icelandic’s muzzle and do some of the very light under shading over the horse’s body. The water will also need a bit more detail.
A close up of the Icelandic’s face, just starting with the basic color and under shading.
Icelandic horse painting work in progress on my Artist desk. Normally our pastures are green but sadly we have been having unusually dry and very hot weather, hence all the brown.
I have been working on the water and background a bit more. I finally finished the under shading done on the Icelandic and have started on the first layer of dapples on one part of the horse’s body. Now I have to let it dry for awhile. Know it looks a bit strange right now but there is a method to the madness. ;O)
How have I been creating the dapples on the Icelandic, wet on wet and tiny pieces of salt of all things. The salt will make a dapple pattern much like you see on a horse. However, it did not work quite the way I was expecting using watercolor pencil.
As you can see, I am slowly making progress. Have added more layers to the dapples and shading to the body of the Icelandic. I have also started to work on her head, mane and tail.
This is a closeup of the dapples. She will be a medium dark dappled Icelandic mare. I have some under shading on her tail but it is very hard to pick it out with this camera shot.
Worked on the dirt a little more, pushed the big rock more into the background and have added two layers of color on the main part of the Icelandic’s legs.
Here is a close up of what I have gotten done so far. Couple more layers of color on the body to go and then I need to work on the mane and tail.Finished!
I finally decided that this painting is finished, as I did not want to over work it. The Icelandic mare in the painting is based on my Grey Icelandic mare, when she was younger. I tried to keep the ground simple as I wanted the horse to stand out. I have a problem with making things too detailed.
This painting is 99.9% Watercolor pencil, used like you would Watercolor cakes. The paper is my favorite bright white hot press paper and the size is 14″ by 20″.
I have to admit I am not totally happy with this piece but it is the best I can do.
