10′ bench made of sapele, cast concrete and stainless steel by artist Nico Yektai

Nico Yektai is an artist living and working in Sag Harbor, NY in The Hamptons. He has developed a unique style of woodworking that can now be seen in the round on his website, www.nicoyektai.com. He pursued this technology because he feels there is no better way to view the all around composition and detail in his work. The sculptural forms reveal themselves in a way that was only possible when viewing the work in person. A huge step forward for viewing Nico Yektai’s unique pieces of art furniture

Console table made of maple and glass. The steam bent curves bring the table to a new level of movement in this composition

The 3D Gallery features 10 pieces from his diverse collection of furniture. More pieces will be added provided that they fit on the on the turntable. Each piece is shot 32 times as the turntable is incrementally rotated. The editing work is time consuming, but the results are worth it. The javascript effect is isolated in a lightbox and requires a desktop or laptop. Sorry iPhone/android surfers.

There is more to the website than the 360 degree views. The functional pieces of art furniture are broken into three categories- Benches, Tables and Other Pieces. Each piece is presented with more information a click away such as, blog posts of construction, category links, press… There are sub categories for easy browsing of the numbered series and outdoor series of benches. There are also sub categories of the Tables category for easier browsing of coffee, console, dining and pedestal & End tables. This framework will serve Nico’s work well as he embarks on some larger pieces and exciting shows.

Nico Yektai is a sculptor who makes one of a kind pieces of furniture. For more information on existing pieces or to inquire about a custom piece, please contact Nico at 631-458-4090 or email at mail@nicoyektai.com or www.nicoyektai.com.

Elle Marie Hair Studio Opens Second Hair Salon in Lake Stevens

July 9th, 2010 by 1stAngel

A picture of the Elle Marie Hair Studio Lake Stevens store front at night, just days before the official opening of the salon.

When family members Colleen Buck, Lorry Green, and Jody Bossert teamed up to open a hair salon in Mill Creek in August 2006, they committed to offering guests an upscale salon experience driven by a well-educated, cohesive team that would ultimately result in steady growth. That growth became evident on June 5th in Lake Stevens when Elle Marie Hair Studio opened the doors to their second salon.

The new Lake Stevens hair salon resides in the space previously occupied by Studio 9 hair salon, located on Highway 9 a mile north of Highway 2. The facility has been completely remodelled from the ground up to maintain the elegance and professionalism you’ll find at their Mill Creek location. The salon features seven styling chairs, three shampoo stations, a grand colour bar, and a beverage buffet. In addition, a special mini-photo studio offers guests the opportunity to have free “before and after” pictures taken. “We recognized that online social media web sites are becoming more and more popular. Unfortunately most people don’t have quality head-shots for their profile pictures, nor are they eager to pay for high-quality printed images when they just need a quick, digital file for their web needs. Head-shots are best taken immediately after a salon makeover so adding this mini-photo studio as a free value-add to our clients made perfect sense,” said co-owner Jody Bossert.

A picture of the Elle Marie Hair Studio Lake Stevens commercial complex during the day, just days before the official opening on June 5th, 2010.

All new guests are welcomed to enjoy $10 off their haircut and an additional $10 off their colour service. Plus, to show their appreciation, Elle Marie extends the same discount to both the existing guest and the new guest on all referrals.

The team at Elle Marie Hair Studio pride themselves on their ability to excel in customer service due to their commitment to education. Their ability to execute on the latest trends allows them to offer each guest an in-depth consultation and offer suggestions that ultimately result in a style that best accommodates the look that guest had originally envisioned. Elle Marie Hair Studio is a Redken Elite salon and the bi-annual Redken Symposium in Las Vegas is always well-attended by the team. In addition, they regularly welcome stylists from surrounding salons to join their team at their Mill Creek location for classes taught by industry experts such as Chris Baran, Ann Mincey, David Stanko, and the 2007 Platform Artist of the Year, Sam Villa. And when leading educators aren’t scheduled to visit the Seattle area, Elle Marie sends their stylists to them. The route to Redken 5th Avenue in New York City is a familiar one.

Elle Marie’s commitment to excellence has resulted in them receiving their fair share of recognition as well. In 2008 they received the South Snohomish County Chamber’s Business Excellence Award, have been a top 5 finalist the past two years in Evening Magazine’s Best of Western Washington Contest, and were recently named one of the top 200 salons in America by Salon Today magazine.

Elle Marie Hair Studio has a strong commitment to the community and looks forward to getting involved in Lake Stevens. Co-owner Jody Bossert is currently the Vice President of the Mill Creek Business Association and plays an active role in the organization of the Mill Creek Festival every year. In addition, the salon’s Pink Hair for Hope pink hair extension drive every October has raised upwards of $10,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Plus, as an official sponsor of the Everett Aquasox minor league baseball team, the salon looks forward to its second year raising funds for the Mary Kay Foundation by providing buzz cuts at the game on Sunday, August 29th.

In the beginning, the potential for growth as presented by their salon consultant painted a less than rosy picture, including a statistic that less than 5% of salons in the country were actually profitable. Unfazed, the mother, daughter, and son ownership trio made a commitment to open their second salon around year five. Two weeks ago, they reached their mark in year three.

Prior to opening her hair salon in Mill Creek, Green enjoyed offering hair services to the Lake Stevens community at Studio 9 hair salon. She had a great relationship with owner Katie Kelly. However, when the opportunity presented itself to break out on her own, Green elected to do so. It was a tough decision, but she moved forward, careful not to burn any bridges and maintain the friendship. She and Kelly remained in contact until one day Green received a phone call from Kelly, who said she was ready for a change. Kelly always had a vision for her salon, but had been struggling for some time to take it to the next level. Juggling work and family can be a chore for anyone, but even more so for someone in Kelly’s shoes. Not only was she a business owner in the middle of a recession, but at home was her ultimate priority, her love and joy, her 5-year-old son, Bennett, who was living with autism. So Kelly was eager to find a new owner to take over the day-to-day responsibilities associated with running a business, yet still allow her to remain on staff to continue providing hair services to her loyal Lake Stevens clientèle. Green looped in her business partners, who performed the necessarily due diligence. Before long the decision was made to team up and planning was under-way to bring Elle Marie Hair Studio to Lake Stevens.

Life works in mysterious ways and for Lorry Green and Katie Kelly, their ability to put friendship before business has allowed life to come around full circle in a way that should prove beneficial, not only for them, but for anyone in Lake Stevens who desires an up scale, down town salon experience without the down town commute.

Elle Marie Hair Studio carries both the Redken and Pureology product lines and offers So.Cap. USA hair extensions, Brazilian Gloss treatments, Affirm relaxers and have recently introduced on-location wedding services as well. Guests interested in a fresh, modern hairstyle or hair colour service can call Elle Marie Hair Studio in Lake Stevens at (425) 397-8883 or in Mill Creek at (425) 402-1900 to make an appointment or visit http://www.ellemariehairstudio.com for more information.

Swedish Designer Ulrika Bogo Lands in New York

July 9th, 2010 by 1stAngel

“Stylish and understated”- You And Your Wedding

“Ulrika Bogo’s flower girl dresses are very mini-chic” – Wedding Day

“Thank goodness for Ulrika Bogo, who has designed a delightful collection made to match your own color scheme” – Junior

After receiving widespread recognition in the European press (You And Your Wedding, Conde Nast’s Brides, Wedding Day, OK Magazine) Ulrika Bogo has moved to the United States to pursue her career as a designer of premium quality Wedding and Bridesmaid dresses.

A uniquely Scandinavian approach to design, coupled with an eclectic education in France and Italy, have lent Ulrika Bogo dresses an immediately recognizable aesthetic. The chic simplicity of her design is the perfect antidote to the cliched bows and ribbons associated with run-of-the-mill Wedding and Occasion wear.

Ulrika’s move to Los Angeles in 2008 immediately attracted the attention of the Hollywood glitterati; her dresses winning praise from Rosario Dawson and Rhona Mitra within her first year of production. In 2009, she moved to New York with her husband, rock musician Ed Vallance, and began work on a new collection. This 2010 Winter collection will focus on a range of Wedding and Bridesmaid dresses in organic hemp and silk fabrics.

I am a self taught artist, and have been painting for many years. My work can be found throughout the US, and Canada.

I express my feelings through my art and it makes me very happy to hear someone say that my art brings them joy.
Creating art is to be alive, to love, to taste, to hear, to smell, to see.

I love color and surround myself with colorful objects. My favorite quote to express my feelings towards color is by ‘ Wassily Kandinsky ‘……….
Color is a power, which directly influences the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano strings, the artist is the hand, which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul…….

You can find more of my paintings at: www.redbubble.com/people/NatsArt http://www.brooklynartproject.com/profile/Natalie62

I hope your experience while visiting my gallery is a pleasant and colorful one!…….Natalie

BATH PHIL LAUNCHES 2010 SUMMER SEASON

July 8th, 2010 by 1stAngel

Now in its 4th year, Bath Phil’s Summer Classics series is well-established as an essential part of Bath’s musical calendar. Under the baton of Jason Thornton, the orchestra has built a reputation for excellent music-making, and it will be joined during the season by a fabulous roster of soloists including James Gilchrist, Richard Wainwright, Patricia Rozario (returning after her widely acclaimed appearance with Bath Phil at Christmas) and Peter Donohoe, as well as the Bristol Bach Choir.

Season highlights include Vaughan Williams’ Flos Campi, his seldom performed Viola Concerto which features a wordless chorus; and Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne, performed by one of the leading exponents of the work, Patricia Rozario. The four concert programmes also include performances of Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings, Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Chopin’s Piano Concertos 1 & 2.

Jason Thornton says “I am exceptionally proud of Bath Phil. We are a family of professional musicians who delight in serving our local community and its surrounds and who continue to build a strong artistic reputation. We have built up a trust with our audience and supporters and that is reflected in the programming of our 4th annual Summer Classics. As well as bringing some of the country’s most highly regarded soloists to Bath, we are presenting adventurous programmes including Mahler’s 10th Symphony, Ravel’s Mother Goose Ballet and works by Lutoslawski, Gorecki and Britten.”

Earlier this year, Bath Phil and Jason Thornton generated a great deal of regional and national interest when they invited the Romanian/Moldovan singer Radu Marian, a natural castrato, to perform a concert in honour of Venanzio Rauzzini, one of Bath’s most famous residents. Rauzzini was a favourite of Mozart’s and a musical force of nature in Bath in his lifetime, but not often heard of today – however the large and enthusiastic audience in Bath Abbey on 15th April went some way to correcting that.

In addition to the summer season concerts, throughout the summer (until September) Jason Thornton is also leading an 8 month music project with musicians from Bath Phil called Listen2Us, working with Young Carers and staff. It is the only Youth Music funded Young Carers’ project in England, giving a musical voice to a sector of the community that can sometimes be overlooked and often ignored.

This year’s Summer Classics will once again be in support of the “Space to Grow” campaign at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.

My love of nature took seed during childhood where I spent many afternoons barefoot on the beach collecting shells and wiggly things.
That sand, the salty breeze, and California sun persist; nudging me to recreate the feeling they offered as a child. My appreciation and desire to paint began to flourish as I traveled across the United States, experiencing the local flavors from various small towns we passed through or lived in.

In my art, I endeavor to portray not only the physical but also the essence of the subject. To get that twinkle in the eye, the sweetness in the face of a child, or the softness of dew on a leaf – these things are the heart of the subject and I strive to paint them – bringing me one step closer to that warm rembrance of California sun.

Famed Architectural Photographer Leland Y. Lee, 91: “My First Exhibition” during Modernism Week in Palm Springs

July 6th, 2010 by 1stAngel

Archival pigment print from Ektachrome transparency, 22" x 28"

At 91, renowned architectural photographer Leland Y. Lee has an illustrious career spanning many decades. His photography has appeared in Architectural Digest, Home Magazine, House & Garden, Designers West and countless other publications. He also studied and worked with the icon of architectural photography, Julius Shulman, from 1953 to 1961. But despite his pedigree, he has never shown his work publicly in a significant Gallery Exhibition.

During Modernism Week in Palm Springs, his photography will be on view at the Michael H. Lord Gallery, and Lee will speak at a reception honoring his distinguished 70-year career on Thursday, February 18, from 7 until 9 pm. Modernism Week runs from February 12 through 21, and Lee’s work will be showcased at the gallery from February 12 through March 12, 2010.

The Lee exhibition will highlight his vintage photography with a focus primarily on his 1968-1972 documentation of the architectural work of John Lautner, including the Elrod house in Palm Springs and the Silvertop house in Los Angeles. This exhibition coincides with the upcoming John Lautner Exhibition, “Between Earth and Heaven,” at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Michael Lord met Leland Lee in 2009 and immediately realized who he was talking to. He offered Lee the opportunity for this exhibition, and suggested that it would be appropriate as “a headline event” during Palm Springs Modernism Week. Sam Heaton, director of the gallery, says “we were captivated with the images and very pleased that Mr. Lee’s premiere showing would be held at our gallery.”

The reception on the evening of February 18 is open to the public, as is the exhibition, which continues until March 12, 2010.

Established in 1978, the Michael H. Lord Gallery is located in the Palm Springs Uptown Design District at 1090 N. Palm Canyon Drive. Housed in an architecturally-significant building built in 1929 as the garage for the landmark El Mirador Hotel, the 6,000 square foot gallery showcases the finest in contemporary art. Please visit www.michaelhlordgallery.com for exhibition details.
