Budding authors invited to creative writing conference

University of Bedfordshire Authors of the future are invited to a Creative Writing Conference at the University of Bedfordshire on Saturday 10 May.
Key speakers include award-winning author Panos Karnezis and Director of the National Institute for Excellence in the Creative Industries, Professor Graeme Harper, who will share their experiences at the event at the Park Square campus in Luton.
Dr Gavin Stewart, Research Fellow in the Research Institute for Media, Art and Design at the University has helped to organise the conference. He said: “The event is open to anyone with an interest in writing. As well as the key speakers, workshops will be run by lecturers and creative writing students who are completing Master’s degrees and PhDs in a variety of genres.
“There will also be an opportunity to find out more about creative writing courses, as few people realise that many of today’s most distinguished novelists, script writers, and poets hold degrees in creative writing. Not only can academic programmes produce commercially successful authors, but they help students to fulfil their personal writing goals.”
Panos Karnezis was a former engineer before he took up writing. He was shortlisted for the 2004 Whitbread First Novel Award, his short stories have been broadcast by Radio 4, and his latest novel The Birthday Party was published last year to critical acclaim.
Professor Harper is a writer and cultural critic who is a regular speaker on the international circuit and examiner of postgraduate theses throughout the world. He currently edits the journal New Writing: the International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing, co-edits the journal Studies in European Cinema, and is Associate Editor of the Creative Industries Journal.
Registration starts at 9.30am and tickets cost £10 (including lunch) available from Waterstone’s book shop, George Street, Luton, or at the University of Bedfordshire on the day.
