I am just so against bottled water its untrue, but I learned something great today on Facebook when I vented. SOmetimes its good to vent you know, suprising what you learn if you keep your eyes and ears open.

———————————————————————————————-

ME: Did you know that most bottled water is tap water? It uses 1.5 million barrels of oil to manufacture one year supply of bottle water. That is enough fuel to power 100,000 cars. PLEASE stop drinking bottled water.
plastic bottles take 700 years to start decomposing
90% of what you are paying for is the packaging.
8 out of 10 bottles become ladnfill waste
In Canada, municipal water supplies are tested EVERY DAY…bottled water plants are only tested three times a YEAR

MELISSA: First – EVERY household should recycle. 85-95% of all trash can be recycled.

Second – The chemicals used to clean tap water are toxic and used at home water filters (ex: britta, pur) are toxic to the landfills/water supply. Look into it.

For health and the environment, it is better to buy milk jugs of reverse osmosis filtered water. Not all bottled water uses this method of filtration. Reverse osmosis is a cleaner and greener way of filtering water. Milk jugs are made from recycled plastic and they are recyclable. If more people used milk jugs of water, the cycle would be continuous. As in more reuse, rather than creating new plastic used in one-use individual water bottles…. Read more

The expiration date on bottled water reflects the date plastic toxins in the water are too high for human consumption. This process is sped up by heat, which is why a bottle of water tastes funny if it has been left in a hot car. Some retailers such as Walmart do not take heat into consideration, so even their milk jugs of water should be avoided.

ME: My ex worked at the water supply company and the water was VERY good and not toxic at all.

Bottled water is a rip off. we pay to receive water anyway. If not happy with the water company that is supplying water then it is up to us to make the water companies provide good clean water, not buy water twice.

and yes, you and I Melissa, know that we can recycle nearly everything and we do, but thousands are too bone idle to do so and will not even when given the proper bins etc in their own homes. Therefore again, bottled water needs to be stopped and the provided water cleaned up

MELISSA: The level of toxic chemicals in tap water depends on the area each individual is in. Even a home’s piping system can alter tap water. Tap water is NOT safe everywhere. Not all water is equal. Not even close. Reverse osmosis is NOT used in standard tap water cleaning and treatments. Hidden toxins do get into the water supply and are NOT … Read moreautomatically removed from tap water.

I am not given recycle bins for my home – and I recycle everything even though it takes me physically putting forth the effort in not only collection but delivery. Everyone recycling is possible, it just takes effort and the actions of one can change the world. Not everyone will of course recycle, but recycling should not be discounted entirely. Just as everyone will not stop using bottled water, just because you ask them to. Using milk jugs is a viable option.

EVELYN: I bought a zero water pitcher so I could drink the water

MELISSA: This is directly from ZeroWater’s website in the FAQ area:

Q. Does the filter remove Arsenic?
A. At this point in time, we are not certified for reduction of arsenic.

Q. Does the filter remove Chloramine?
A. We have done internal lab testing that shows our filters can reduce chloramine. However, the presence of chloramine can reduce the expected life of the filter, so if you have chloramine in your water, you may need to change your filter more often than normal.

Q. Does the filter remove Phenol?
A. We are not certified to reduce phenols.

Q. Does the filter remove Cryptosporidium?
A. We are not certified to reduce cryptosporidium (microbiological cysts).

Q. Does the filter remove bacteria?
A. The current system is meant to be used with municipally treated, potable water as the current filter will not remove microbiological contaminants.

Q. Does the filter remove oxygen from water?
A. The filters do not remove dissolved oxygen from water.

ME: Well unfortunately thats the crunch word isnt it… effort. Thats what is stopping most people do anything as it is too much effort. I know full well people will not stop using bottled water because I ask them to. I am a realist. HOWEVER, you came along and gave another method, people MAY have learned something from either of us and just maybe … Read morewe will have got at least one person to think about it, or to look it up for themselves…which is all good isnt it :-D

MELISSA: Q. Does ZeroWater remove pharmaceuticals from tap water?
A. The testing authorities have not established protocols to evaluate how to measure if a filter removes pharmaceuticals from water. However, our filters contain activated carbon, which is designed to treat organic substances such as the active ingredients in many pharmaceuticals.

I agree and that is why I posted. If people know their choices and facts, then they can make an educated decision that meets their own standards.

The one thing I do want to add is ZeroWater has a recycle program for their filters. Which is awesome because it the carbon (aka charcoal) and plastic of the filter will hopefully NOT go into a landfill and sit there for 100+ years.

Oh and…the only water filtration process that gets rid of hidden toxins is reverse osmosis.

ME: Thats fantastic :-) I filter myself, using a Brita Water Filter…starving artist, cant afford anything else, especially with the price of water. We just got a meter on and its cut the bill by over 1/3!!

MELISSA: http://www.brita.com/us/support/filter-recycling/

I don’t see any outside the US, but it doesn’t mean it’s not available.

ME: To anyone in the UK All components of the Brita cartridge are recyclable. Cartridges returned to Brita will be returned to our own recycling plant in Germany where the component parts are separated and processed for secondary use. For information on BRITA In-store recycling contact the BRITACare team on 0844 742 4800
