A small bronze sparrow which was part of a Tracey Emin sculpture has gone missing from its home in Liverpool.

The £60,000 artwork, which features the 10cm (4in) bird on a 4m (13ft) pole, was commissioned by the BBC for the art05 festival three years ago.

The pole remains in place outside The Oratory, by the Anglican Cathedral in Upper Duke Street, but the bird vanished about two weeks ago.

Merseyside Police are investigating its disappearance.

A BBC spokeswoman said: “The bird is a unique work of art and we hope its whereabouts are discovered as soon as possible for the people of, and visitors to, Liverpool.

“The BBC commissioned the sculpture but does not own it and therefore does not have duty of care for its maintenance or welfare. This is covered by White Cube gallery and the artist.”

A spokeswoman from the White Cube said: “The BBC commissioned the piece they are the best people to discuss this with.”

Tracey Emin was unavailable for comment.

The Farm, showing a pastoral scene in Lytham, Lancashire went for double its expected price at Bonhams in London.

But a second Lowry painting, The Footbridge, failed to sell at the 20th Century British Art auction.

The Manchester-based Co-Operative Financial Services (CFS) put the works up for sale to fund its programme of community art projects.

Matthew Bradbury, director of 20th Century art at Bonhams, said: “It is a pleasure to be handling two such contrasting paintings by one of Britain’s most admired artists.

“The typical industrial street scene with its familiar footbridge motif that was used in quite a number of Lowry’s paintings complements the more tranquil image of an empty countryside landscape depicting a farm.”

A painting by Beryl Cook, who died in May, fetched more than double its estimate to realise a world record price of £69,600 for a work by the artist.

Booth B26 at the Grand Opening of the Art-a-Fair on June 25th 2008 was packed with people wanting to see the unique wood sculptures crafted by first time International exhibitor, Rey Larreinaga, who emigrated here from Cuba less than 4 years ago. For Rey, doing business as: Afro Cuba Creations (website of the same name http://www.afrocubacreations.com )opening night was a dream come true, proving to him that America truly is the land of opportunity.

Rey’s unusual Scorpion and Lobster carvings and elegant nude torsos had conversations buzzing with excitement. Rey shared his story in his heavily accenting English; “I had no idea that I had this talent inside of Me.” He told curious art lovers.

I had no idea that I had this talent inside of Me.

In Cuba, Rey made a living selling Cigars to tourists, which is illegal and cost him a brief stay in Cuban jail in the late 1990s. After this experience, Rey went to cooking school and became a Chef in Cuba. Not once did Rey pick up a chisel in Cuba. His only “experience” in wood sculpting was watching is long-time Cuban friend carving while they discussed the trials and tribulations of living in Cuba.

In January 2003, Rey fell in love with an American who was travelling in Cuba and he moved to California in September 2004. They married in November 2004 and currently reside in Santa Ana, Ca.

Rey began exhibiting and selling his wood sculptures in local Art Fairs and galleries and EBay in 2006. In 2008, Rey submitted his work for approval to the Art-a-Fair Jury and was selected as one of the 125 artists to display his work in Laguna Beach’s distinguished annual Art-a-Fair. Rey’s unique style carries a strong influence from his Cuban roots while also showcasing a bit of Rey’s personality. He says that the ideas for pieces come from somewhere deep inside of him. His carvings include animals, torsos, masks and Cigar Ashtrays.

To view his work, go to http://www.afrocubacreations.com or visit him at the Art-a-Fair which is currently open to the public and runs through August 31st, 2008.

An important new exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, will show the striking portraits of the great British modernist artist and writer Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), bringing together for the first time a unique visual record of some of the most important cultural figures of the first half of the twentieth century.

58 portraits ranging from delicate drawings to large oil paintings assembled from collections worldwide will chart Wyndham Lewis’s range and achievements as a portraitist. Among the highlights of the exhibition will be his now iconic renderings of his fellow ‘Men of 1914,’ credited with revolutionising 20th-century literature, the writers Ezra Pound, T S Eliot and James Joyce.

Broadly chronological, Wyndham Lewis Portraits begins by showing how Lewis portrayed himself in a series of multiple identities, and then includes from the 1920s and 1930s his portraits of such figures as Edith Sitwell, Stephen Spender and Virginia Woolf as well as Lewis’s wife, Froanna, portrayed in five of his most beautiful paintings and drawings.

The exhibition goes on to chart the high point of Wyndham Lewis’s career as a portraitist - culminating in his 1938 portrait of T S Eliot and features his rarely seen late portraits. As well as the pictures, there are showcases devoted to key texts including the hugely influential Vorticist journal Blast which he edited in 1914-15.

Described by W H Auden as ‘that lonely old volcano of the Right,’ Lewis was known for his strong views, complex politics and volatile friendships. Alongside his work as an activist, avant-garde artist, essayist and novelist, he consistently made portraits. Hailed in 1932 by Walter Sickert as ‘the greatest portraitist of this or any other time,’ Wyndham Lewis was a ‘modern’ artist not only by virtue of formal innovation but by his deliberate and strategic deployment of a persona which affected the nature of his portraits.

In his earlier work, he did not conceive of personal identity as an ‘essence’ which it was his task to reveal to the viewer; instead, he was concerned with the variety of possible performances of identity that anyone - especially any artist or writer - might make, and saw his task as presenting a formal equivalent of such performances in his portraits. This enables the exhibition curators to show not only some of the main ‘personalities’ associated with Wyndham Lewis in apparently definitive major oils but also in clusters of drawings that reveal quite different aspects of their self-presentation.

Wyndham Lewis was born (reputedly on a yacht) off the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. His British mother and American father moved to England but separated in about 1893. His mother subsequently returned to England, where Lewis was educated, first at Rugby School, then at the Slade School of Art, University College, London, before spending most of the 1900s travelling around Europe and studying art in Paris.

From 1908 he lived mostly in England where he was a founder-member of the Camden Town Group in 1911. In 1912 he exhibited three major oil-paintings and some Cubo-Futurist illustrations to a projected edition of Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens at the second Post-Impressionist exhibition. This brought him into close contact with the Bloomsbury Group, particularly Roger Fry and Clive Bell, with whom he soon fell out. Between 1913-15 he founded Vorticism, the style of geometric abstraction for which he is best known today.

In the 1920s and early 1930s he became better known for his writing than his painting. His novels include Tarr, set in Paris before the First World War, and The Human Age, a trilogy comprising ‘The Childermass’ (1928), ‘Monstre Gai’ and ‘Malign Fiesta’ (both 1955), set in the afterworld. A fourth volume of The Human Age, ‘The Trial of Man’, was begun by Lewis but left in a fragmentary state at the time of his death. His writings have had a far-reaching influence on modern literature with Enemy of the Stars, for example, (first published in Blast in 1914) being a proto-absurdist, Expressionist drama that anticipates Beckett. In 1930 Lewis published The Apes of God, a novel satirising the art world of London in the 1920s - several of the characters are based on sitters in this exhibition.

During the 1930s and 1940s Lewis returned to more concentrated work on visual art, and paintings from this period constitute some of his best-known work. This is the time of many of the portraits - brought together for this exhibition - for which he is best known, including those of Edith Sitwell (1923-36), T S Eliot (1938 and again in 1949) and Ezra Pound (1939).

Lewis spent the Second World War in the United States and Canada but he returned to England in 1945. By 1951, he was completely blind. In 1956 the Tate Gallery held a major exhibition of his work, Wyndham Lewis and Vorticism. Always interested in Roman Catholicism, he nevertheless never converted, and he died in 1957.

One of few people to have been equally successful as an artist and a writer, Wyndham Lewis is now regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in the 20th Century Modernist movement. As this major exhibition shows, before the First World War, through his time in North America, and at the end of his life back in London, it was the human subject which Wyndham Lewis returned to time and time again.

Wyndham Lewis Portraits is co-curated by Paul Edwards, Professor of English and History of Art at Bath Spa University, and Richard Humphreys, Curator, Research at Tate.

Wyndham Lewis Portraits was made possible through the support of Christie’s, The Wyndham Lewis Memorial Trust, the Old Possum’s Practical Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London, says: ‘Wyndham Lewis was a modernist writer, commentator and portraitist of great power. We are very pleased that this exhibition can bring together his portraits for the first time.’

PUBLICATION
A fully-illustrated book by the curators, Paul Edwards and Richard Humphreys, accompanies the exhibition. Priced £15 (paperback). Published 3 July 2008.

Vorticists and the Bloomsbury circle shared a common determination to pioneer a British response to Modernism. They worked and exhibited together in close collaboration until their differences were very publicly aired in a row over the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1914. Richard Cork, Frances Spalding and Paul Edwards are among the leading critics, curators and art historians who will explore the conflicts and allegiances that sparked the rift and its consequences. Organised in association with Charleston: An Artists’ Home and Garden’. To book please call 0207 312 2483.

The Piet? by Michelangelo in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Michelangelo carved the Pieta from a single slab of marble in less than two years. His interpretation of the Pieta was far different than those previously created by other artists. Michelangelo decided to create a youthful, serene and celestial Virgin Mary instead of a broken hearted and somewhat older woman. According to Giorgio Vasari, shortly after the installation of his Piet? Michelangelo overheard someone remark that it was the work of another sculptor, Cristoforo Solari. Michelangelo then carved "MICHAELAGELUS BONAROTUS FLORENTIN[US] FACIEBA" on the sash running across Mary's breast. It was the only work he ever signed. He later regretted his outburst of pride and swore to never sign another work of his hands.

Amateur dramatic group, The Pantiles Players, will present Shakespeare’s ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona’ in the charming walled courtyard of Runcie Court at Salomons.

The play is believed by many scholars to be Shakespeare’s first play and expresses themes that are revisited in his later plays. The over-riding theme of the play is love and focuses on the relationship of two childhood friends, Valentine and Proteus (the two gentlemen of the title) and that between Valentine and Silvia and Proteus and Julia.

The Pantiles Players is an amateur dramatic group originally formed in 1942 to provide local wartime entertainment. They were first invited to play on the Pantiles bandstand in 1983 and have performed a play, usually Shakespeare, there every year since.

Sales and Marketing manager at Salomons, Dawn Ellingham-Lord, said: “The courtyard at Runcie Court is the perfect setting for an outdoor performance and provides a magical evening ambiance with excellent acoustics.

We are delighted that the Pantiles Players are returning to us again this year for their annual Shakespeare event.”

Salomons is located on the David Salomons Estate, Broomhill Road, Southborough, Tunbridge Wells.

Performances take place daily at 7.45pm, except Sunday which is at 3pm.

Tickets are £9 per person (£8 concessions).

Please contact the Box Office between 10am and 4pm on 01892 534341 or email thepantilesplayers@yahoo.co.uk

Picnic boxes are available for all performances and cost £6.95 per person.

On Thursday 17th July, a two-course carvery menu is available at 6pm for £15 per person.

On Sunday 20th July, a three-course carvery lunch is available from 12.15pm for £17.95 per person.

For pre-show refreshments contact Salomons direct on 01892 515152.
