Five Ideas for Overcoming Artist’s Block
On one of the forums I participate in regularly, an artist recently bemoaned the fact that he was bored with his pictures. He asked what he should do about it and how he could spice up his portfolio. As other members responded, I couldn’t help thinking about the creative blocks we often face as artists. What is it about the blank canvas, paper or computer screen that terrifies and excites us at the same time?
I don’t have any firm answers on how to deal with a creative block, but I have some ideas that have helped me. So here is a list of 5 things that I do to feed my creative muse and get back to work. If you’re blocked or just bored, it can’t hurt to try something new.
1. Take a break: Sometimes you just need to do something else for awhile. Take a walk, play with the dog, go bowling, anything that gives you something else to think about. The repetitive nature of doing something nonartistic like jogging or washing the dishes also can stimulate a new idea.
2. Look at other art: Surf the web and look at art online, go to galleries or museums. Pick a great master and study his work and life in depth. See how aspects of his style or subject matter can lead to ideas about your own work.
3. Take an art class: Just being with other creatives can be enough to inspire you. Remember to never compare yourself with others, though. Everyone is on a unique path that can’t be travelled by anyone else.
4. Try a new medium: Being new at something gives you the freedom to just have fun without the pressure of having to be good at it. If you paint, try playing with clay. Or if you work in glass, pick up your camera. You never know; you might find a new favorite medium to add to your portfolio.
5. Read books about creativity: I read some of my favorites over and over again. Some suggestions are:
A Whack on the Side of the Head by Roger Von Oech
A Kick in the Seat of the Pants by Roger Von Oech
The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron
The Vein of Gold: A Journey to Your Creative Heart by Julia Cameron
The Zen of Creativity: Cultivating Your Artistic Life by John Daido Loori
The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks. … by Steven Pressfield
There are many more ways to break through a creative block—probably as many as there are blocked artists. You can start with these, research one of the books I’ve suggested, or devise your own methods. Whichever you choose, you can be sure your block won’t last forever and you’ll soon be engaged in and enjoying your art again.

I like to go to the galleries and observe how the paint is applied, then I like to step back 10 - 15 feet if possible and view the image in its entirety.
Good Post Joan!
