International supermodel Claudia Schiffer is set to add a touch of glamour to Graduate Fashion Week next month.
Taking a break from strutting her stuff down the catwalk Claudia will join a panel of judges hoping to find the top designers of tomorrow.
More than 1,000 fashion students, from 49 university courses, are all expected to travel to London’s Earls Court 2 in the hope of winning the £20,000 top prize.
In addition, members of the public can see what life in the fashion fast lane is really like. Organisers hope an Education Day on 12 June will show just how rewarding a career in fashion can be with a wide range of exhibitors, catwalk shows and careers advice on offer.
Last year for the first time in the event’s history, the £20,000 prize was split between two winning students. Nicholas Thomas of the University of the West of England in Bristol and Jasper Sincha Chadprajong of Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. Both winners have gone on to flourish in the world of fashion. Nicholas was immediately snapped up by knitwear supremo John Smedley, while Jasper has used his winnings to help fund an MA at the Royal College of Art in London.
Graduate Fashion Week chairman, Terry Mansfield CBE reckons this years’ event will be the best yet; “Graduate Fashion Week is where it all begins and brings together some of the country’s very best emerging designers for a four day showcase event. For us, 2008 is an incredibly exciting year, not only are we celebrating a move to Earls Court 2, but also the launch of the event’s first ever Education Day.”
