Ryan Munson
Welcome to the Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art?
I have always, as long as i can remember been interested in art. For the most part purely as a spectator. I have been a poet for over 20 years, and one day I decided to become an artist. So, for the last three years i have been experimenting with all things artistic.
What style of art do you use most?
My style is very diverse and always changing. I started with crayon art. I then began working with acrylics on canvas. Now I am manipulating digital photographs and creating digital art on my computer. I am learning everyday.

Has your style changed from when you first began as an artist?
Well, I began using crayon. I am a school teacher and i was always doing things with the students and crayons. That is what put the art bug in my head. These days most of my art is done on the computer.
What medium do you use?
Currently i am mostly doing digital work. I do paint and i am open to experimenting with almost anything to make art.
What made you choose that medium?
I find myself mostly working on the computer because of the seemingly limitless things i can achieve. I find that I am able to work much faster on the computer. It also seems that it is the new modern craze. The computer allows many people to express themselves in an artistic way. Many people would not be able to that otherwise.

Do your ideas come from life or imagination?
I am influenced by everything around me. The past present future and fantasy all impact my art a great deal. Ideas come from life and imagination. Both avenues lend themselves to inspiring great art.
How do you choose your images and colours?
Color is a driving force in my work. I typically like to use alot of bright colors. That is one great thing about the computer, I can easily change colors to suit the piece. Ultimately the starting colors subconsciously come to me. After that anything ANYTHING could happen.
Who is your favourite artist?
I am my favorite artist. When I finish a piece I always think wow I did that. Other than myself I like Dali Picasso Pollack O\’Keefe and the rest.
What is your favourite piece of work by yourself?
Today, My favorite piece is Pent. That changes all the time. Now that I am thinking about…. No it is Pent.

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?
I might spend 12 to 24 hours on a painting. I could do a digital piece in minutes. On the other hand I can work on a digital piece for my entire life.
How well do you take criticism?
I like to think that I take criticism well. I think it depends on where it is coming from. I am self taught so I do rely on critiques to gauge the impact my work has on those around me.
What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?
I haven’t had a block yet.

Lucy
How do you know something is ‘finished’? Is it easy to walk away?
Something clicks in my head and then I know it is done.
Have you had exhibits in galleries?
My work can be seen online at redbubble.com and imagekind.com
Have you any exhibits in galleries planned for the future?
I believe I am on a waiting list at the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center to display my work.

What are your plans for the future?
Plans? What is that? No, I have two great young daughters now. Everything takes a back seat to them.
What advice would you give new artists?
My advice for a new artist is to work as much as possible. Always try new things. Keep an open mind and make things happen.
