Barbara Morrison
Welcome to the Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art, in general?
I have always been interested in art and spent alot of time in Museums in New York. My husband is a painter in NYC so I was around the art world in the 70’s , 80’s and 90’s.
When did you first become interested in photography, specifically?
I have always been interested in photography. I always looked through my grandmothers old photos from the early 1900’s. I became the family documentarian, taking photos of everyone and everything

Sea Of Carts
In what other forms of art do you also work, if any?
I am also a writer. I wrote a book called “Dixie Cups and Zinnias” about growing up in th3 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s on Long Island.
On which style(s) of photography do you specialise?
I don’t like to limit myself to one style but I am basically a realistic photographer. I take macro an medium close-ups quite often, but also landscapes, portraits etc.
Has your style changed from when you first began?
If so, why?
My first digital photo’s had a little too much saturation or contrast or brightness. Luckily you can revert them and start all over.

Pool Edge
What kind of equipment do you use?
HP Photosmart R727
What made you choose that equipment?
It was my daughter’s camera.
How do you choose what you’re going to photograph?
I usually look for color and form or texture, something unusual.

Riding Into The Shadows
What kind of editing do you perform on your photographs, if any?
I don’t do much editing. I just make minor adjustment to the brightness ,contrast, and color.
How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?
It might only be an hour from taking the photo till posting it
How do you know when a piece is finished?
Is it easy to walk away?
I take several shot of the same subject, make minor adjustment and which ever one has the “WOW Factor” is the finished photo.

Wire Fence
What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?
I just take my camera with me where ever I go and it isn’t long before I see something interesting.
How well do you take criticism and how do you make use of it?
I listen to all criticism, especially if it is from someone who has a body of work that I respect. Sometimes I listen and make a change and sometimes I don’t. In the end it is my vision that helps me decide. Sometimes people will love a photo that I didn’t really like all that much. Other times my favorite phot will get no response at all.
Who is your favourite photographer?
Edward Curtis, Edward Steichen, Stieglitz and many really great photographers on Red Bubble.
Which one of your photographs is your favourite?
Bull Emerging from Primeval Forest.
Have you exhibited any of your work in galleries?
No

Fallen Flowers
Will your work be included at any upcoming contests or galleries?
If so, where and when?
I haven’t really pursued it. I’m just enjoying taking the photos right now.
What are your plans for the future?
I live on Kauai, in Hawaii. And even though it is very beautiful, I would like to travel a bit and take some different pictures
What advice do you have for budding photographers?
Always have your camera with you and don’t be afraid to have fun and let you personality come through in your photos.
