    Welcome to the Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art, in general?

Since I can remember- my family has always been involved in the arts.

When did you first become interested in photography, specifically?

As a very small child, I loved to look through my Grandmothers photographs of her travels around the world. I received my first brownie camera at 8 years of age.

In what other forms of art do you also work, if any?

I love to paint- mainly oil on canvas.

On which style(s) of photography do you specialise?

I am continually evolving my style, but I especially love to travel and capture special moments in time as well as portraits. As technology changes, so does my style! Now that I have gone mainly digital because I love the instant gratification.

What kind of equipment do you use?

Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 is my main digital camera. I also have a 35mm Nikon N6006 with a Sigma 28-80 zoom lens. I use an HP Media Center computer.

What made you choose that equipment?

I loved the feel of my Sony Cybershot and it has a Carl Zeiss lens, when I purchased it in 2005 it was pretty advanced technologically with 7.2 MP. Its still a GREAT camera.

How do you choose what you’re going to photograph?

I see the shot in my minds eye and pretty much end up with what I want.

What kind of editing do you perform on your photographs, if any?

Mainly I don\’t edit my photographs- very rarely do I tweak my photos in HP Image Zone. I don\’t use fancy equipment or computer software- just basic stuff!

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?

Photography is not quite like a painting for me. When I paint it can take a week, or a month. I have to be completely satisfied with the result. My photos are basically you get what you see! When I shoot a photograph I have it framed and the lighting pretty much like I want it.

How do you know when a piece is finished? Is it easy to walk away?

With photography, its there in front of you, it is what it is at least its that way for me. With a painting- it is so hard to walk away.

What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?

Have a glass of wine! lol

How well do you take criticism and how do you make use of it?

I take criticism to heart, although people are all different and have different likes and dislikes. Its really true- beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    Who is your favourite photographer?

I LOVE Dorothea Lange’s works. Her subjects were always so interesting.

Which one of your photographs is your favourite?

How can I choose one over the other? My new favorite photograph is The Beach Bar.

Have you exhibited any of your work in galleries?

    Just online galleries.

Will your work be included at any upcoming contests or galleries?

I’m working on it! Until then, please visit my gallery on www.redbubble.com/people/CathyJones

What are your plans for the future?

To become the best damn photographer I can be! And be happy!
