    Welcome To The Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art, in general?

High School in Chicago, Illinois is where I became interested in art.

When did you first become interested in photography, specifically?

I began to play with Photography while stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Navy.

In what other forms of art do you also work, if any?

I also use Acrylic paints for my Abstract Expressionist work.

My major interest is table top imagery, I call it “Styll Lyfe Photography”

Has your style changed from when you first began?

    If so, why?

My style hasn’t changed since leaving photography school, just more familiar with the tools. It is still about chasing the light, good composition, sharp focus, and telling the story.

What kind of equipment do you use?

Now days, I have down-sized from 4 x 5 equipment, medium format, and my Nikon F3 just sits there remembering when It was my favourite 35mm instrument. I currently use Nikon D70s, with wide angle and various other long range types. For me it is about having fine lens.

What made you choose that equipment?

When I assisted commercial photographers most of them had Nikons for heavy duty backups to their Hasselblad and large format cameras. The talked about the quality and longevity of the equipment.

I’ve chosen to work in studio with inanimate objects because they stay put. You put an Orchid in place and it sits there, ’til the cows come home, not so with people.

What kind of editing do you perform on your photographs, if any?

I basically compose in camera…cropping, metering, exposing for shadow or high lights and all the things “we use to do with film”. Old habits still work.

How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?

Sometime I will work on an image for 3 or 4 days, depends on lighting or whether something needs to be included in the scene. Most of my work is done with ONE light on Black Velvet Backgrounds.

How do you know when a piece is finished?

Is it easy to walk away?

You know it when it’s time to stop. The work will tell you when.

What do you do to overcome a ‘block’?

I practice T’ai Chi, read, go for walks, paint abstracts whenever photography seems to be at a lull.

How well do you take criticism and how do you make use of it?

I can take criticism from credible sources because we had to present our work for critiques in school for that very reason. Art School and Photography School were both the same about that area of developing one’s skill level.
