Margarita Peak-Clewett
Welcome to the Artists Blog

When did you first become interested in art, in general?
My Dad is an antique collector. I grew up with all sorts of antiques in our home. My father is also a music lover. He doesn’t read music. He plays by ear.
My mom loves to work with her hands. She was always teaching us crafts and baking. Plus there are several artists in my family. So pretty much, I would have to say, I had a love for all kinds of art as a young girl.
I played Clarinet in junior high and high school.

I love to write. I wrote skits and plays for church groups. I published “Bountiful Blessings” A collection of poetry by Margarita Peak-Clewett in Dec. 2005. It has been printed twice.
I took a class at the Veronica Cass Academey of Photographic Arts in 1992.
I worked in a photo lab as a negative retoucher for a while. I enjoyed remaking photos and touching them up.
When did you first become interested in photography, specifically?
In 1987 I went to work for a local photo lab. My job was touching up photos for professional photographers. I have always enjoyed taking photos.
But looking at all the wonderful photos that came across my desk, really opened my eyes to a whole world of creativeness that can be done with a camera.

In what other forms of art do you also work, if any?
I enjoy sewing by hand. ( I draw pictures on white cloth and paint them with fabric paint then make a quilt top or a tote bag.) I make hand crafts. I also love writing poetry which I add to greeting cards I design.
On which style(s) of photography do you specialize?
I would have to say Scenery is my passion

Has your style changed from when you first began?
Yes. I have started noticing more things. Now even if its not something that I think is very appealing, I take the photo and edit it.
Normaly a drab, or plain photo can work into a beautiful art form.
What kind of equipment do you use (film, digital, cameras, lenses, PC, etc.)?
My faithful KODAK Digital Camera and my PC.
What made you choose that equipment?
To be honest, the camera was an aniversary present from my husband last year. Then he bought me a lap top computer a few months later. This year he upgraded the memory on my laptop.
How do you choose what youre going to photograph?
Pretty much its whatever grabs my attention

What kind of editing do you perform on your photographs, if any?
I use COREL PAINTSHOP PHOTO PRO X2. I crop the photo to my liking and sometimes I use filters for an evening setting or to warm things up a bit.
How much time (on average) does it take to complete a work?
A small photo normally takes me about two hours to edit and be happy with. A more detailed work can take me a few days.
How do you know when a piece is finished?
If I am pleased and it speaks to me then it is finished. No its not easy to walk away. Some times I will go back and change things several times.
On a poem, I will rewrite it about 2 to five times before I consider it complete.
What do you do to overcome a block?
I stop where I am and do something to take my mind off of it. Normally something will pop back in my head after a short rest.

How well do you take criticism and how do you make use of it?
Like most people, I don’t like to be wrong. But I do take what I am told and try to look at it from that person’s stand point.
Criticism is something that helps get a better view. I don’t always like it. But I do tend to take it and examine it.
Who is your favourite artist?
THOMAS KINCAIDE
What are your plans for the future?
Most of what I do is a hobby. But I do have a novel in the works and I have a second poetry book I am editing now.
What advice do you have for budding photographers?
Keep at it. Follow your dreams.
