  3. Hello. Here is a quick guide on how to start screen printing.

Silk screening is probably one of my favorite hobbies. I take 2 Saturday out of the month to focus on nothing but Silk Screening.
I have been doing it for roughly a year now and have gotten really good at it. This is a quick little (inexpensive) guide on how to
create your own do it yourself screen printing in your garage or backyard, etc…

To start off you need a frame. Some people have used old square picture frames but in my experience it’s just better to buy the correct frame from a art store. Then depending on how big of a print you want to have, you need a frame large enough to fit the design inside and with at least 6 inches on all sides of the design inside the frame. Secondly you are going to need a silk screen, also known as mesh, to stretch tightly over one side of the frame and either staple ( if using a picture frame ) or jammed inside a little knotch thats all the way around the frame and plug it with thing rope or frame plug material. Once you have your frame now the fun begins.

You need to purchase some photo emulsion from an art store such as BlickArt.com and spread that over the mesh. You need to let that sit in the dark for about an hour to dry completely. Now you need a design.

You can create your own design farely easily with the right software. I use Adobe Illustrator with Vectors. Look up vector art if you don’t know what it is.

I then create my design and print it out on a a clear plastic thats the size of a peice of paper. The kind that is used in college projectors. once you have the design you need to get your frame, put the design on top (backwards), and use a highpower light, halogen light bulb, and shine it on the design for 10 minutes to burn in the design to the mesh.

Once that is done quickly wash the frame and mesh with high power water. Don’t worry you wont ruin it. Eventually the design will start to appear where you burned it in.

Once dried, you need to place the frame on a shirt that is stretched out with no wrinkles and pour some ink into the frame. Then you can use your squegee and press the ink over the design onto the tshirt.

Run it over two or three times. And thats it. That is pretty much a quick way to make custom designed shirts.
