Lenkiewicz work damaged in fall

A painting by former artist Robert Lenkiewicz has been damaged after a display wall fell over during an exhibition of his work in Devon.

The collapse happened at the Westpoint Arena near Exeter during a two-day public viewing ahead of a sale by Bearne’s Art Auction.

The 15m display wall had about 20 paintings on it when it collapsed. Read more

Beat bobby lands publishing deal

A police officer has quit his job after landing a £800,000 publishing deal to write crime thrillers.

Pc Matt Hilton worked as a beat officer in Cumbria before securing the five novel deal with Hodder and Stoughton.

The 42-year-old, of Carlisle, says he has finally achieved his dream after working for the police and in security. Read more

Rowling honoured at book awards


Glamour at the awards

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has received an outstanding achievement prize at the 2008 Galaxy British Book Awards in London.

The writer was one of several honoured at the event, which also saw awards go to Ian McEwan, Afghan novelist Khaled Hosseini and actor Ewan McGregor.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown sent a video message praising Rowling for work that had “the whole country reading”. Read more
