Pick of the Day – Yxia Olivares
I am very inspired by Yxia’s gallery on Fine Art America. Her brilliant artworks are fresh, thought provoking, and vibrant. Her art renders a multi-cultural influence, speaks to today’s social issues, and addresses the lighter side of life. Her passion and love for art is evident in each piece featured. I have a high regard for her talent and works of art. Thank you Yxia!
The youngest of 9 siblings, my brothers, my sisters and parents hail from the Dominican Republic and I was born and raised in New York City. I mainly work with pastels and acrylic paints and feature portraits, illustrations, still life and anything else that inspires me. I also do work in pencil and oil on canvas. I’m a self taught artist; as far as I can remember, since the age of 6. I did study fashion design at the High School of Fashion Industries and graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology (Associates Degree) in New York City where I got a brief taste of sculpture, fashion Illustration and life drawing. I am always intrigued, motivated and moved by people’s eyes, facial expressions, and body language; it always tells a story of their life, their joy, tribulations, history, etc. I work from life, photographs, magazines, books and my imagination (freestyle). Everyday for me is an endless learning odyssey. Most of the time I don’t really plan my work, I just ‘feel’ a certain way and I pick up a pencil or a pastel stick and I start and keep flowing to see where it takes me. I like to experiment with expressionism, realism and surrealism. I love working on collages too.
Aside from my love affair with art, I also spend alot of time with 2 of my other passions: design and dance. I design and handcraft leather and fabric accessories for men and women (http://mbraze.etsy.com) and I’ve been touring the world and working on stages and tv as a professional dancer for the past 15 yrs (www.blocnyc.com)
Thank you very much for stopping by today! Your feedback and comments are highly appreciated
