One of the world’s most illustrious illustrators has joined forces with University College Falmouth’s BA(Hons) Illustration course to celebrate exceptional graduate talent.

Quentin Blake - probably best known for his instantly-recognisable illustrations of Roald Dahl characters - has provided a foreword for Illustrated Quotes & Sayings 3 - an industry source book of work by the latest graduates from the University College’s internationally-renowned BA(Hons) Illustration course, each of whom have selected a quote or saying and then illustrated it in their own style. The result is an evocative mix of styles and genres.

Likening the book to a large box of chocolates with a wonderful range of assorted centres - “there’s something for all tastes, some of us will have special favourites, and many, I hope, will be happy to scoff the lot” - Quentin Blake also highlights the individuality of each contributor and how they will develop in all kinds of interesting ways as they embark upon their journeys as professional illustrators.

The book will be on sale during University College Falmouth’s Summer Shows, which take place at the College’s Woodlane and Tremough campuses from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 June. It will then be launched at the Royal Society of Arts in London to an assembled gathering of alumni and invited guests.

“I selected the Quotes & Sayings theme because you can apply any illustrative context to it - from advertising illustration and narrative fiction to editorial comment and information,” explained Course Leader, Alan Male. “Fundamentally, it is an essential industry source book that provides publishing, advertising and media professionals with a rich vein of creative talent to commission work from.”

Male himself is no stranger to the world of international book publishing, having illustrated more than 30 complete books during his career. His latest book - Illustration: A Theoretical & Contextual Perspective - was recently published by Watson-Guptill Publications in New York and Thames & Hudson in the UK, and is being translated into 30 languages for publication across the globe.

Illustrated Quotes & Sayings 3 was edited by Alan Male, designed by Peter Bennett and production was overseen by Stuart Odgers. Copies of the book will be available to order online from 17 June 2008 by visiting www.falmouth.ac.uk/illustrationbook

In April 2008, University College Falmouth merged with Dartington College of Arts to create a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth’s expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington’s expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.

The merger will pave the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall in 2012, creating a Higher Education institution unique to the South West.

University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
