Award winning design expert joins Cranfield

Simon Bolton, internationally acclaimed designer and innovation consultant, has joined Cranfield University as Chair Professor of Creative Design and Director of the Centre for Competitive Creative Design.Simon graduated from the Royal College of Art. His work has been exhibited in the Design Museum in London, the Axis Gallery in Tokyo and the Pompidou Centre in Paris among others. One of Simon’s co-products - the Pinch Pull bag dispensing unit - is used in Tesco and Sainsburys by over 10 million people a week.

Simon specialises in helping companies improve and develop their design capabilities and has extensive experience of working in Europe, North America and Asia for local and global brands. He is also co-founder of the London-based design consulting group Creative Resource Lab.

Of his new role at Cranfield, Simon said: “It is an exciting opportunity to add value to Cranfield by embedding creative design thinking within University activities and the prospect of connecting the Centre for Competitive Creative Design (C4D) to local and global partners will lead to new and stimulating opportunities.”

Cranfield’s Centre for Competitive Creative Design (C4D) aims to encourage students, lecturers, researchers and industry partners to explore creativity and use design as a core driver to improve innovation and competitive practice in UK and global industries. The £5.5m initiative is a partnership between Cranfield University and Europe’s largest specialist design, art and communication university - University of the Arts London.

Falmouth graduates fly free

More than 650 Art, Design and Media students were inspired by industry experts and encouraged to seize every opportunity to make their mark on the world as they graduated from University College Falmouth last week.

Graduates from the College’s innovative range of undergraduate degrees - from Garden Design and Graphic Design; Fine Art and Film Studies; and the whole spectrum of Art, Design and Media disciplines in between - received words of wisdom from several distinguished speakers during the six ceremonies held at Falmouth’s Princess Pavilion in the presence of friends, family and staff. To mark the centenary of the founding of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), this exhibition celebrates the importance of engineering in creating some of the most iconic buildings of the past 100 years. Using three themes (towers, bridges and large enclosures) to find a pathway through a wealth of structural achievement, the exhibition brings to life the design and construction of edifices including New York’s Empire State Building, Switzerland’s Salginatobel Bridge and Poland’s People’s Hall – as well as more modern projects including the Millau Viaduct, the Eden Project and the still-rising Burj Dubai.
