The majority of people in the UK (60%) wish they knew more about photo editing software so they could produce better photos, according to research released today by creative software developer Serif. The new poll* of 2,000 individuals also revealed that the majority (72%) use less than half of the controls and options on their camera, and 57% do not currently use photo editing software to edit their photos.
The study was commissioned to examine the nation’s attitudes to photography and photo editing following the launch of PhotoPlus X5 on 12th September 2011. The powerful digital photo editing software from Serif is designed for photographers who want to organise, edit, enhance and share their photos.
The research also revealed what people normally do with their own photos, with almost a fifth (19%) admitting to doing nothing with them. Of those that do something, the majority (56%) said they straighten and crop their images, followed by removing red-eye (47%), organising them (24%), adding creative filters and effects (18%) and removing unwanted people and objects from photos (16%).
“With the majority of households in the UK owning at least one digital camera, more and more people are taking up photography as a hobby,†says Gary Bates, Managing Director at Serif. “It is surprising though that many photography enthusiasts are not using cameras to their full potential or using photo editing software to make enhancements to their pictures.â€
“Most people we surveyed wish they knew more about photo editing software, so they can produce better photos. The challenge is educating them about how they can easily and quickly edit photos using software. You don’t need to be a tech buff – most enhancements can be made at the click of a button in PhotoPlus X5 and the program’s ‘How To’ tab also offers a helping hand.â€
When asked how much they were prepared to pay if they were to purchase photo editing software, over half (51%) of the survey respondents would not be prepared to part with any money as they felt free photo editing software such as PhotoPlus Starter Edition would suit their needs. Of those who do see the value in paying for software, 79% said they were happy to spend up to £100 and 13% between £100 and £199. Just 8% would pay more than £200 for premium priced competitors.
While price would affect 42% of people’s decision making process when buying such software, the majority of those surveyed (61%) said ease-of-use was an important factor when deciding what to buy. Other influential factors included the program’s features (34%), the manufacturer’s reputation (29%), technical support (15%) and power (12%).
