CHOICE

The medium of photography to me, is so much more than capturing a memorable landscape or portrait of a favorite family member or interesting stranger. It is in essence the ability to not only capture with the elements of photography a truly great scene, which is in itself a most precious thing, but most importantly to create something which has two factors, an emotive stirring within which one is startled by the work, and then to produce that in a print which is accurate. Accurate either to nature's manifestation or to the artist's.

I like to think I am both lucky enough and capable enough, to occasionally produce work which accomplishes both.

As a photographer of digital work today, I often wonder how I would handle the drudgery of film if suddenly film were again the only medium available. In saying that I am glossing over all the other types of shooting, Daguerreotype , Polaroid etc. I would manage and be relatively happy to do so, but I will say that even with all of the other time-consuming aspects of digital such as the workflow (which can be an endurance test), the ingestion and trashing or starring favorites, then placing in appropriate folders, backing up onto media, either cd/dvd or external storage devices, the constant learning and updating the software applications associated with this newest medium and then the mastering of printing, ICC profiles, color spaces, calibrating one's monitor on a very regular basis and then the updating of hardware, the lenses, the camera bodies and so much other related gear, I will say that I would still rather remain in the digital realm.

Often artists of all mediums are asked when they started as an artist. It is an important question to some. And I believe it has relevance to many. To me it has little bearing on the end result, their art. If a 94 year old lady suddenly had an epiphany or something jolted her memory and she began creating random art which was considered stunning, would it matter if she had not created any prior to this event? The more appropriate question might be what are the many forces which cause you to produce your art?

My work is created and produced for the most part with a goal of placement in Fine Homes and Corporate environments. This work is meticulously worked on for hours, sometimes days to produce that effect. Often I ask clients if what they want in their homes or offices has a theme or a color scope, a subject, a cause and so on. If I have what they want or know I can produce their intention I proceed with an estimated time of delivery. If I feel my work will not satisfy their needs I will spend whatever necessary time it takes to refer a fellow artist I personally know who can. If I cannot refer one who can I will steer them to my agent. The end result is they will get what they want.
