EMU'S UPCYCLED JEWELLERY

Emu's Upcycled Jewellery is based in Cornwall and was set up in August 2010.
The products are designed and handmade by business owner, Emma Northcott. She delights in extending the life of an unwanted recycled material (which would normally be thrown into land fill sites) by changing it's purpose. It's form remains unchanged but it's worth is increased as it transforms into unique pieces of jewellery.
Within the last year, the product range has increased rapidly to include a quirky mix of clothing, jewellery and art work.
Emma and her family spend many a happy day collecting raw materials from the local environment such as woodlands, beautiful beaches and clay trails. Often, friends; neighbours and local businesses donate their 'rubbish' to help Emma create her designs. Materials are also hand-picked from charity shops or boot sales.
Once the appropriate materials are gathered together, it's into the garden studio they go to be incorporated into an original, tasteful design. Clothing becomes embellished with vintage fabrics and sea plastics. Reclaimed slate is decorated with sea plastics and buttons to create abstract art. Redundant jigsaws become pretty necklaces.
Once completed, the products are then lovingly packed into jewellery boxes made from recycled paper and magazines.
When Emma is not working in her studio, she is running Emu's Jewellery Parties in which the lucky host receives a free gift and 10% commission of total sales, to spend on an item of choice. If this wasn't enough, a free piece of jewellery is also given if at least 2 further parties are booked on the day! The host is provided with invitations to send to friends.
Emma has also teamed up with Sarah Drew, another local artist, to offer courses so that anyone can learn to upcycle and take their finished artefact home!
The upcycled jewellery, clothes and art work are sold through the business website and several galleries throughout Cornwall and in Canada.

My first photography video-exhibition

Okay so perhaps saying it's a “video-exhibition” is going a tad far, but I didn't know how to explain it for a title! The aim is to show off my photography via youtube which needs to have things shown in video form so….!! :)

The video shows my “Beautiful Dead” series as it stands so far. This is an on-going project showing dead animals I have found in my garden or around the area where I live (Herefordshire/Forest of Dean). The idea behind the project is to show that even though these animals are dead and some have been killed by other animals/cars/etc they are still beautiful and can remind us when seeing them of how they were when alive, as all the animals are ones which we have seen running/flying/jumping around. The pictures should also show what life and nature is like, with no exceptions.

I understand some people won't like the project and the pictures. I understand, appreciate and respect that. I would just like to say that my aim isn't to offend…maybe in some cases shock, but my style is usually more toward the atmospheric and darker image.

But i hope people can at least appreciate the images that are shown. Thankyou. And to see a few of them larger please visit my website http://www.dottygallery.com

Following the gallery's acclaimed exhibitions of Modern British and Latin American Art in 2010, this autumn Austin / Desmond Fine Art is delighted to present a solo exhibition of one of the most influential and pioneering artists of the Middle East: Parviz Tanavoli, the internationally recognized artist and Iran's first significant modern sculptor.

This exhibition, his first solo show in Britain since 1960, distinguishes him as one of the finest draughtsmen of his talented generation – almost the last to benefit from a Western Education. He graduated with honours in 1959 at the Accademia Di Belle Arti Di Brera, Milan under the sculptor Marino Marini. The selection of work on display features over thirty-five pieces including ceramics, fiberglass and bronze sculptures, paired with contemporary drawings, emphasising his abiding and joyful love for Persian architecture, culture and poetry.

The exhibition is drawn entirely from the artist's collection and features a number of works never seen before. He has taken part in several international group exhibitions and is one of the most popular artists at auctions. His work The Wall (Oh Persepolis) set an unbroken world auction record of 2.8 million dollars, for the sale of a work by a Middle Eastern artist at Christies Dubai, 30 April 2008.

To mark this event, Tanavoli will participate in an artist debate held at The British Museum on 22nd September 2011, organised with the help of The British Museum and Iran Heritage Foundation.

Jiří Kolář - Master of Collage

Reznichenko Collection
Czech Republic
ReznichenkoCollection@gmail.com

June 29 – August 3 2011

Reznichenko Collection is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper by the Czech artist Jiří Kolář.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see a selection of collages by one of the most prominent artists of the latter half of the 20th century.
Kolar launched his artistic career as autodidact, translator and poet.
Well-known for his poetry based on visualized text, Kolář was an active intellectual, member of art groups Group 42, UB and Křižovatka (Crossroad) and was among the signatories of Charta 77.
His first exhibitions displaying collages were held in the late 1930s. From the ’50s Kolář focused on artworks in which he experimented with various forms of collage techniques that he invented such as confrontages, chiasmages, rollage, effaçage and crumplage.
One of his favourite collage methods is called rollage: cut-out stripes from magazines and different images were fixed and combined on the support next to each other.
Kolář also produced new and vibrant colors in his collages by gluing on printed papers in an astonishing minimal process.
The artist worked with art reproductions in a singular manner, he crumpled and glued them in a playful way, sometimes erasing selected parts of well known paintings to show the viewer a new form of reality.
Not only the brilliant artist invented new techniques and helped to develop new methods of collage but through his work he raised the viewer's level of consciousness. His distinctive style ingeniously penetrates the multiple levels of human existence.
Kolář was the great master of collage, the first and only artist who devoted his entire artistic carreer to this specific medium. With his minimal and sharpened approach he investigated the very essence of poetry for a new possible artistic reality.

The show “Jiří Kolář – Master of Collage” opens on June 29 2011 and closes on August 3 2011.
A limited edition catalogue will be released.

Jiří Kolář (1914, Protivín – 2002, Prague).
Kolář’s work has been exhibited at Guggenheim New York, MAM Miami, Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia Madrid, Narodni Galerie in Prague, ICA London, Kunstmuseum in Düsseldorf, PAC Milan, Documenta in Kassel, and many renowned international galleries.

UNIT 24 is pleased to announce Kevin Wayne solo exhibition:
LEFT TO OWN DEVICES
MUSIC: Rude Mechanicals

Brought to you by Unit 24 (www.unit24.info)
And Kaparte Promotions (www.kaparte.info)

PRIVATE VIEW DATE: 11 August 2011 -6.30pm-9.30pm
Exhibition till 31 August 2011

UNIT 24 GALLERY
20 Great Guildford Street
SE1 0FD London
nearest underground: London Bridge, Southwark
http://www.unit24.info

For his first solo exhibition at Unit 24 Kevin Wayne presents Left to own devices, a show
comprising of hand‐made sculptures and box constructions produced over the last three
and a half years.
Wayne’s work is rooted in what could be termed as a ‘more is more’ attitude, in that the
viewer is invited to investigate and explore a variety of visually dense and detailed
objects that sit at a crossroads of alternative illustration and the model‐making craft
enthusiast.
“This may be an unfashionable thing to say but I believe in the magic of hand‐made
objects and their capacity to engage and enchant. My work comes out of a need I have
always had to make and play around with bits of card and glue. I have tried making work
out of nearly anything you can think of but I have always returned to sitting out in my
garage late at night cutting and sticking things together.”In his recent work Wayne has started to employ a visual grammar 0f re‐occurring
characters and environments such as lost or disaffected children and teenagers, tangled
networks of pipes and wiring and whimsical constructions of would‐be buildings and
machines.

“I am interested in the state of being confused or lost and the awkwardness and
vulnerability that comes with it. Over the last decade I worked with children who are in
foster care and have been subject to some form of neglect or abuse. I am fascinated by
how in many cases these children have largely through their behavior, constructed their
own separate worlds as a means of guarding against ‘normal society’, and how any
outsiders may, as past experience has taught them, wish to exploit and abuse.”
If Wayne’s work were to be attached to any contemporary trends it would be towards
the movement (predominantly rising out of the American west coast over the last decade
or so) towards ‘Lowbrow’ art and Pop‐surrealism, as epitomized by artists such as Mark
Ryden and Gary Baseman. As with 1950’s and 60’s Pop art Britain found its own way of

About Unit 24
Unit 24 is both a hyper-modern, completely minimalist space, just three minutes
from the great Tate Modern, and a functional dry cleaning business. You can go
there to collect your spotless cleaning but in fact this is an art gallery of
deliciously ironic and serious intent. The spacious white cubes of its interior are
host to an amazing array of contemporary art, a million miles away from being an
elitist institution. Unit 24 is open to a wide group of viewers; it communicates to
the modern urban citizen of the futurist cityscape around Tate modern that art
can’t be avoided any more than any of our other essential needs – dry cleaning
included.

http://www.unit24.info

As with 1950’s and 60’s Pop art Britain found its own way of
translating shared sensibilities through artists such as Peter Blake and Eduardo Paolozzi.
Wayne regards himself in a similar mould, taking on the mantle of celebrating the
lowbrow leftovers of visual culture, and attempting to find a way of fusing the parochial
and idiosyncratic concerns of a man living and working in a provincial English town.
Ultimately Wayne is attempting to create unexpected and surreal little windows into

Wildlife artist, Lara Virginia, has won the category 'World Birds', in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2011 competition.

With more than 1000 entries from around the world, the finalists were short listed to just under 100 and from these, 13 Category winners and an overall winner chosen on the day of judging. An almost defiant Harpy Eagle is the subject of Lara's winning work, entitled 'Amazonian Snatcher''. The judges said of the portrait; “With this superbly executed piece, Lara has captured the essence of this South American raptor in a simple but stunning portrait. The judges were totally won over”

“I am honoured and delighted to have had my painting selected” says Lara. “This is the first year I have entered this competition and to be included amongst so many accomplished artists is very humbling. The elusive Harpy Eagle is a Near Threatened status bird of prey and it concerns me greatly that their existance could be consigned to the history books. Through art, it is possible to highlight the perils of so many species that are struggling to survive. The collaboration between conservation organisations and artists ensures an ongoing committment to protect the planets' wildlife for future generations.”

All the winning paintings will be exhibited at the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society exhibition in August, as well as featured in the August edition of the BBC Wildlife magazine, and online at http://www.discoverwildlife.com.

Ground-breaking art promotion

The face of the art world is set to change on Monday 18th July. Traditional ways of promoting art and artists will be left behind with the launch of pikapixel.net and the work of Julio Cordero.

Cordero is a Spanish painter of passion and originality. His work has already made a big impact in Ireland and Spain, but from 18th July his paintings will be launched across cyberspace in a way that changes forever the relationship between creative artists and their public.

18th July is an opportunity to meet Cordero, to admire his work and, if so desired, to buy one of the pieces. But it is also a chance to engage with the creative process in an entirely new way. Julio has created an oil painting specifically for this event. It exists both on canvas and as a virtual painting – and those who register their interest can buy one or more pixels of the virtual work. This viral process culminates with the sale of the final pixel, which is celebrated by one of the pixel owners being chosen at random to receive ownership of the real oil painting.

But pikapixel.net is more than just a way to promote a particular painting. Simon Howlett, the pioneer of pikapixel.net, sees it as opening up a new relationship. “The Launch on the 18th should create quite a buzz,” he says, “and we’ll then develop this interest into a community that can follow Julio’s career and engage directly with the artist himself. It has never been done before – and through the internet, it makes it possible to have a relationship with the creative process and the artist that until now has been the exclusive preserve of a few rich patrons.”

And Julio Cordero is worth following! Like Velázquez and Picasso, he was born in the flamenco and bull-fighting region of Andalucia. Entirely untaught, his eyes were opened by a chance meeting with a group of artists who shared their skills and techniques with him. Julio initially made his name painting murals in bars and restaurants across Europe, before moving on to become a prolific portraitist. Now resident in the UK, Julio is able to develop his exploration of a warm and passionate abstraction.

The Launch of this exhibition of Julio Cordero’s paintings and pikapixel.net takes place at 6.30pm on Monday 18th July. The event is free – but booking is essential on 0117 924 4512 or info@pieriancentre.com. It takes place at the Pierian Centre, 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol BS2 8SA.
